Detect edit points using Scene Edit Detection

Last updated on Apr 1, 2026

Learn how to simplify the process of finding original cut-points in your footage with the Scene Edit Detection tool in Adobe Premiere.

Scene Edit Detection automatically identifies cuts within a single video file, helping you separate it into individual shots for easier editing. It’s especially useful when you’re working with a long master clip or compiled footage and want to isolate each shot for trimming, applying effects, or color correction.

Import your media into Premiere and add it into the timeline.

Right-click the sequence in the Timeline panel, or select Clip > Scene Edit Detection from the main menu.

In the Scene Edit Detection dialog box, choose one or more of the following options:

  • Apply a cut at each detected cut point: Premiere adds an edit point wherever it detects a scene change.
  • Create bin of subclips from each detected cut point: Each detected segment becomes its own subclip in a new bin.
  • Create clip marker at each detected cut point: Instead of cutting, markers are added at detected change points for manual review.

Select Analyze to start the process and apply the chosen actions.

Premiere automatically adds cuts to the linked audio as well. If you don't want that, separate the audio from the video before applying scene edit detection. Alternatively, you can select the audio clips after the cuts have been applied, right-click, and select Merge to combine the audio clips together.
