Create reveal animations using masking techniques

Last updated on Apr 2, 2026

Learn how to create smooth reveal animations in Adobe Premiere using simple masking techniques with shapes, text, and keyframes.

The Properties panel in Adobe Premiere provides a powerful workflow for creating reveal animations using masks.

Before you begin:

Create a project, import media, assemble a sequence on the timeline.

Create a shape and text layer using the Tools panel.

To convert the shape layer to a mask, select the shape and select Mask with Shape

In the Effect Controls panel, animate the position of the text.

To position the text outside the masking shape layer for frame 0, select the Keyframe tool in the Effect Controls panel.

The Program Monitor shows a preview of the video and text through the masked shape. The Effects Control panel has the Property of the text adjusted.
The shape layer becomes a window through which you see the animated text.

Move the playhead in the Effect Controls panel to the right and change the Position value of the text until it is revealed in the shape mask.

Move the playhead back to frame 0 and select Play. Check and tweak the animation if necessary.
