Generative Extend known issues

Find known limitations and workarounds for Generative Extend in Adobe Premiere.

Speech to Text transcription is not supported

Extended clips cannot be transcribed using Speech to Text, which prevents Text-Based Editing and captioning workflows for the extended portions.

Workaround: Transcribe clips before extending them. Enable Automatic Transcription at project start through Preferences > Media Analysis & Transcription to ensure complete transcription coverage.

Media Intelligence indexing excluded

Extended clips do not appear in Media Intelligence search results when searching by visual content.

Workaround: Search for the original source clip in the project panel instead of the extended sequence clip.

Speed adjustments not supported

Clips with speed changes or time remapping cannot be extended. You will receive the warning "Generative Extend does not support clips with speed changes or time remapping."

Workaround: Remove speed adjustments before extending the clip at 100% speed, then reapply the speed adjustment after extension completes.

Multicam clips require flattening

Multicam clips cannot be extended directly. You will receive the warning "Generative Extend does not support nested sequences."

Workaround: Right-click the multicam clip and select Multicam > Flatten to convert to the selected angle before extending.

Single-side extension limit

Generative Extend can only be applied to the beginning or end of a clip, not both. Attempting to extend both sides triggers the warning "Generative Extend can only be applied once."

Workaround: Make a blade edit in the middle of the clip before any extensions. Extend the beginning of the first segment and the end of the second segment. The edit point remains invisible. To extend the opposite side after an initial extension, use Render and Replace by right-clicking the clip in the timeline or through the Clip Menu.

Music content unsupported

Extending clips containing music results in incomplete audio with silence and a "Can't complete" label. This includes music-only content and background music in mixed audio. The extended clip icon in the project panel displays a question mark. You will receive the error "Generative Extend can't process your audio. Check that your audio clip doesn't contain music."

Workaround: For clips with partial musical elements, right-click and select Unlink to separate audio and video, then extend only the video portion. For music-only audio, consider using Remix to extend after unlinking.

Multichannel audio is not supported

Audio with more than stereo (2 channels) cannot be extended.

Workaround: Unlink the AV pair before extending and process only the video portion. Disable Linked Selection by selecting the icon in the sequence header or through the Sequence menu. Alternatively, select Unlink from the right-click menu or Clip Menu.

Markers not preserved

Markers on the original clip are lost after performing Generative Extend.

Workaround: Manually reapply markers after the extension completes.

Logging metadata not transferred

User-entered logging metadata fields (Shot, Scene, Good Take) do not transfer to extended clips. Intrinsic metadata (FPS, inpoint, outpoint) is maintained.

Workaround: Sort by name in the Project panel to display the extended clip adjacent to the original. Reference metadata fields from the original clip.

Timecode reset to zero-based

Extended clips always use zero-based timecode regardless of the original clip's timecode. The original clip remains unchanged.

Workaround: Overlay the original clip above the extended one to reference specific timecode moments.

Modify clip properties unavailable

The following property modifications are unavailable through the Modify menu (accessed by right-clicking a clip in the project panel or through the Clip Menu):

  • Audio Channels
  • Color
  • Interpret Footage
  • Timecode
  • VR Properties

No workarounds exist for these limitations.

Source clip color space not accessible

The Lumetri Color panel cannot view or alter the source clip color space for extended clips.

Project Manager does not collect extensions

Extension segments cannot be collected by the Project Manager.

Workaround: Use Render and Replace on each extended clip in the sequence before running Project Manager. Access Render and Replace by right-clicking the clip in the timeline or through the Clip Menu.

Exchange formats require preparation

The following exchange formats are not fully supported: XML, AAF, EDL, OMF, and OTIO.

Workaround: Use Render and Replace on each extended clip in the sequence before exporting any exchange format. Access Render and Replace by right-clicking the clip in the timeline or through the Clip Menu.

Edit in Audition unsupported

Extended clips cannot be sent directly to Audition for editing.

Workaround: Use Render and Replace on each extended clip in the sequence before sending to Audition. Access Render and Replace by right-clicking the clip in the timeline or through the Clip Menu.

Replace with After Effects composition unsupported

Extended clips cannot be replaced with After Effects compositions.

Workaround: Use Render and Replace on each extended clip in the sequence before sending to After Effects. Access Render and Replace by right-clicking the clip in the timeline or through the Clip Menu.

Productions environment creates duplicates

Working in a Productions environment generates duplicate project items when adding to each project within the production due to a lack of cross-project media referencing support. Each project containing the extended segment requires a corresponding project item.

iPhone HDR clips unsupported

iPhone HDR clips cannot be extended because Generative Extend does not support HDR content.

Workaround: Work in a Rec.709 sequence and use Render and Replace to convert to SDR. Set your sequence color space to Rec.709 by selecting Sequence Menu > Sequence Settings > Color Management > Color Setup, then select Direct Rec. 709 (SDR). Premiere built-in tone mapping automatically converts HDR timeline content to SDR. Then use Render and Replace by right-clicking the clip in the timeline or through the Clip Menu.

Generate Again creates new project items

Selecting Generate Again creates a new, different project panel item rather than replacing the previous generation.

Revert to Original unavailable in specific cases

Right-clicking the AI-generated label shows Revert to Original as greyed out when:

  • The extended clip has negative speed applied
  • The original clip is no longer in the project or has been deleted from the Projects panel
  • Audio or video fails in an AV clip, causing the Compound Clip icon in the Projects panel to show as missing media
