Search options in Premiere

Last updated on Apr 2, 2026

Learn about the different ways to find assets in your project in Adobe Premiere.

When you’re working with lots of clips, sequences, bins, and media, Premiere offers multiple search and filter tools to help you quickly locate specific assets. Understanding these search options helps you stay organized and move faster in your edit.

In Premiere, you can search for assets by name, metadata, file type, label color, markers, and more, either in the Project panel or in the Media Browser. Some search tools help you quickly filter what’s visible, while others help you precisely locate items regardless of where they live.

Search in the Project panel

The Project panel houses all of your imported media, sequences, and bins for the current project. You can search here to quickly find an item by name or metadata:

Search box

At the top of the Project panel is a Search box, type any text to show only items whose names or searchable metadata include your text.

Tip

You can search by partial names; for example, typing “interview” will show all items that include “interview” anywhere in the name.

Filtering and columns

You can add metadata columns (like “Media Type,” “Resolution,” or “Comment”) and sort by them to narrow down results. Combine column sorting with the search text field to surface exactly what you need.

Search in the Media Browser

The Media Browser lets you explore and import assets from your storage drives. Use the Search box at the top of the Media Browser to find files on disk by name. Search here is useful when you’re browsing external media, not just items already imported into your Project panel.
