Separate overlapping speakers

Learn how to separate overlapping speakers in your audio clips using AI, making it easier to edit each speaker independently in Adobe Premiere.

Premiere allows you to identify and separate overlapping speech in an audio clip. The selected clip is analyzed to generate separate audio tracks, allowing you to adjust each speaker independently while preserving the original audio.

Note

This is a premium feature. Processing costs one Generative Credit per second of audio processed, so it's worth trimming your selection down to the crosstalk section rather than running it on a long clip. Keep in mind that Separate Crosstalk automatically adds a two-second handle to each side, and that added time will be reflected in the cost shown before you process.

Select the audio clip in the Timeline.

Cut the audio clip to select only the section containing overlapping speech. Clips can run anywhere from 1 second up to 10 minutes. If your overlapping section falls outside that range, trim it down first.

Select the audio clip or segment, then do one of the following:

Right-click the selected clip and select Separate Crosstalk.
Open the Properties panel and select Separate Crosstalk.
Select Clip > Separate Crosstalk.

The Clip menu is open and the Separate Crosstalk option is selected and the same option is highlighted in the Properties panel as well. — Access Separate Crosstalk using one of the available methods.

In the Separate Crosstalk dialog box, review the information and select Separate.

Premiere generates separate tracks for each detected speaker and a background track.

Note

You can separate speakers for one audio clip at a time. Multi-clip selection is not currently supported.

The original audio track is automatically disabled. Review and edit the generated speaker and background tracks as needed.

Tip

Separate Crosstalk doesn't have a default keyboard shortcut. You can assign one in the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog box.
