Substance 3D Modeler 1.19.0 overview
V1.19.0 adds the new Assets workflow to Export mode, introduces a new parameter and some improvements to primitives, adds adaptive subdivision when converting meshes to clay, and brings some general quality-of-life improvements, including a new shortcut editor.
Watch the video below for a quick introduction to Project assets, or read on for a full list of release notes.
Modeler V1.19.0 full release notes
Export:
- Introduced Project Assets to Export mode.
- Define one or more objects in your scene as an Asset to remember export settings. This allows you to track multiple sets of export settings in a single scene, making it easy to iterate on and re-export individual objects without constantly revisiting export settings.
- Added the option to determine export polycount by a percentage instead of an explicit number. This helps keep a consistent polygon density while continuing to revise an asset in ways that could drastically change the desired export polycount. Use the Polycount by selector to switch between Percent or Count.
Primitives:
- Added a Shell parameter to primitives. Shell makes the primitive shape hollow. If Shell is set to a non-zero value, the visualization lines on the primitive will show the effect when the primitive is selected, however the results will only be visible in general if another primitive cuts away from the shell primitive to see into the hollow area.
- The Shell parameter is also available on groups when the combine mode for the group is not set to None.
- Changed how outlines are displayed for groups of primitives.
- If objects inside the group are not positioned to intersect with the X, Y, or Z planes, no outlines will be visible for the given group.
- Fixed a bug where primitive properties would be visible in the Palette even when a primitive wasn’t selected.
- Fixed a bug where changing primitive combine modes could leave artifacts.
Mesh to clay:
- Mesh subdivision is now adaptive. Instead of subdividing uniformly across a mesh, adaptive subdivision only subdivides areas that need it to achieve a given clay resolution, meaning better results and lower performance costs when converting to clay.
- You can now right click the Convert to clay button to access subdivision settings for the mesh.
- On mesh import, added an option to convert the imported mesh to clay immediately.
- If Subdivide is toggled on, the convert to clay action will convert the subdivided mesh.
General quality of life improvements:
- Added camera previews in VR
- Non-physical objects like the gizmo won’t appear in the camera preview.
- Added the option to smooth camera movement.
- Viewport settings including FOV and perspective are now persistent across sessions.
- Fixed a bug where cameras would appear selected without the Select tool equipped.
- Changed the appearance of cameras in the scene.
- Modeler now automatically changes tools if the scene is changed into a state where the equipped tool would no longer be valid.
- It’s now possible to modify shortcuts in Preferences > Keyboard shortcuts.
- As a first pass, there are some issues with shortcuts in this list, and modifying unbound shortcuts might have unexpected results. We recommend testing any changes to shortcuts on a new scene before working on critical projects.
- Fixed a crash that could happen when using the Buildup tool with textures.
