Layers
Layers are the only scene object that can hold clay, and are foundational to Modeler as a result.
Create a layer
There are a few ways to create a new layer:
- Open the Actions menu and use the Add layer button.
- While you are not scoped into a layer, switch to the Clay tool. Modeler will automatically create a new layer so that you can place clay.
- 💻 You can use shortcut ctrl + n to quickly create a new layer.
Duplicate an existing layer
There are two types of duplication:
- Standard duplication will create a copy of an existing layer. Editing the copy will not impact the original layer.
- Instancing creates an instance of an existing layer. Changes that you make to the instance will affect the original layer and vice versa.
To duplicate a layer:
- Scope out of the layer.
- Switch to the Select tool.
- Select the layer.
- Open the Action menu
- Use Make Link to turn on instancing.
- Use Unlink to turn off instancing.
- Duplicate the layer
If instancing is turned on, the new layer will be an instance of the old layer. Otherwise, the new layer will be completely independent from the old layer.
Resolution
Resolution determines the amount of detail that is possible in a given space. At a low resolution, sculpts might seem blobby and undefined, while at high resolution, a high level of detail is possible.
Layers are the only scene objects that hold clay, and are therefore the only scene objects that have resolution. To adjust layer resolution:
- While scoped into a layer:
- Open the action menu, and use the resolution controls to increase or decrease resolution.
- While scoped out:
- Select a layer or group of layers. Then open the action menu and use the resolution controls to increase or decrease resolution.
While the Action menu is open, a resolution preview is visible on clay in the scene.
You can find out more about how Modeler handles resolution here.
