Learn how to generate a background in a few steps.

  Generate Background is a beta feature in Photoshop on web now available for testing and feedback.

Follow along with any project to learn how to retouch images.

Use the Contextual task bar to create a new background that matches the lighting, shadows, and perspective of your subject.

  1. On the Photoshop on the web homepage, under Start something new, select Upload an image and browse for a file on your device.

  2. Select Remove background from the Contextual task bar.

  3. Select Generate background .

  4. In the What would you like to generate textbox, type a prompt describing your preferred background.

  5. Select Generate .

  6. Select the desired background from the Contextual task bar. 

    Tip:
    • Select to generate more variations of the background based on the current prompt and Layer properties to edit the text prompt and generate another background. 
    • Select More actions to access other options, including Good result, Bad result, Delete variation, Report variation, Generative AI terms, Watch quick video, and Hide contextual task bar
  7. Select Download.
