Generate images in Photo or Art format with simple text prompts using Text to Image in InDesign.

  Text to Image (Beta) is a beta feature in InDesign now available for testing and feedback.

Create images easily with Text to Image, powered by Adobe Firefly, in InDesign.

Provide a brief description of the Photo or Art you want to generate, and InDesign will swiftly provide multiple variations for you to explore. Try out the variants and select the one that suits your layout.

  • Before you proceed, ensure you're connected to the internet, as Text to Image requires cloud processing.
  • Currently, Text to Image is only available in the InDesign versions of English International and English North America.

Generate images using the Text to Image panel

Type a simple text prompt or select one from the Sample Prompts to generate an image from the Text to Image (Beta) panel.

  1. Go to Window > Text to Image (Beta).

  2. Type in a description of the output you're looking for in the Prompt field.

    Tip:

    Need some inspiration? Select the Sample Prompts section and then select any readily available prompt to view the text and image variations.

  3. Select the Content type from Photo or Art based on your requirements.

  4. Select the Aspect ratio from Frame dimensions, Landscape (4:3), Portrait (3:4), Square (1:1), Widescreen (16:9), or Vertical (9:16).

    If you've selected an image frame before selecting a variation, it will fit the frame irrespective of the Aspect ratio.

  5. Select the   Generate button.

  6. Select an image from the three generated options in the Variations section to place it anywhere in your document.

  7. Hover over a variation, select More options  , and then select Place variation,   Good Result,   Bad Result,   Report variation, or   Delete variation.

Generate images using the Contextual Task Bar

Type in a prompt and select the Generate button to view image variations to match your prompt.

  1. Select a frame or use a frame tool (Rectangle Frame   tool, Ellipse Frame   tool, or Polygon Frame   tool) to add a placeholder for the image.

  2. Select the Text to Image button in the Contextual Task Bar that appears.

  3. Type in a description of the output you're looking for, then select the Generate button.

    Tip:

    For an effective text prompt, stick with simple and direct language. Use three to eight words, including a description, character, color, scene, and more. Don’t worry about adding commands like add or remove. Instead, use simple phrases like sunrise behind mountains, a man with headphones, or an ice cream parlor.   4. Select the right or left arrows to view and select different variations of your prompt.

  5. You can also select the More Options   icon to   Show Text to Image Panel,   View GenAI Guidelines,   Hide Context Bar,   Pin Context Bar, ,  Good Result,   Bad Result,   Report Variation.

    Note:

    Once you select   Hide Context Bar, the Contextual Task Bar will not open by default when you create or select an image frame. Select Window > Contextual Task Bar to view it again.

Tips and tricks

  • All applied variations are embedded into the document.
  • The Text to Image panel shows up to 300 non-applied variations. Any variations over this limit are automatically deleted.

Known issues in Text to Image

  • Generated images appear missing when you open a .idml file with generated images.
  • When a graphic frame with the generated image is placed in the CC library, the image is missing when imported into another InDesign document.
  • Place and Link for generated images does not work.
  • Generated images are missing in the Links panel when .indd containing these is placed in another .indd.

  • Text to Image is an AI-powered capability that can be used to create various images. Enter a text prompt, then select the Generate button to see a selection of images based on the content type and format or aspect ratio you choose. The newly generated content can be scaled and edited.
  • Get inspired with Text to Image. Quickly generate various images so you can progress from an idea to artwork for brainstorming and experimentation. 
  • Images are editable and created non-destructively in a new layer, enabling adjustments as you see fit and the ability to reverse the effects when you change your mind without damaging the original document.

How does the Text to Image feature in InDesign accelerate creative workflows?

Text to Image enables you to create images using a simple text prompt.  Rather than searching for stock or acquiring images, Text to Image creates images without requiring you to leave InDesign.

Do users need to be experienced with InDesign to use Text to Image?

InDesign users of all levels can use Text to Image. Text to Image capabilities can be accessed with a simple text prompt to achieve realistic results that will surprise and delight you.

What is the maximum resolution of the output created using generative AI features in InDesign?

The Firefly model currently returns an output of 2K resolution for generated images (up to 4K for expands) to InDesign.

Can I use the images generated with Text to Image for commercial purposes?

In general, you may use outputs from generative AI features commercially. However, if Adobe designates in the product or elsewhere that a beta version of a generative AI feature cannot be used commercially, then the generated outputs from that beta feature are for personal use only and cannot be used commercially.

Should I add Content Credentials for images generated using Text to Image?

Adobe may attach or publish Content Credentials for content created with generative AI features to let people know it was generated with AI.  Learn more about Content Credentials.
