Learn how to select objects with the Object selection tool.

Follow along with any project to learn how to make selections.

  1. On the Photoshop on the web homepage, under Start something new, select Upload an image and browse for a file on your device.

  2. Choose Select > Object selection .

  3. Select the highlighted object to create a section. The default selection mode is set as Rectangle, but you can switch to Lasso if preferred.

    Note:

    By default, Sample all layers is enabled to help you make a selection based on all layers instead of just the currently active layer.

  4. In the Select panel, use Select more  or Select less to add to or subtract from the current selection as necessary.

  5. Select More options and choose from the given options:

    • New selection: Creates a new selection.
    • Intersect with selection: Combines it with the previous selection.
  6. With Show all objects enabled, object selection will automatically appear once the detection is complete.

  7. In the Contextual task bar, you can further refine the selection using other options such as Generative FillCreate maskAdjustInvert selectionContent-aware fill, or Deselect.

    Tip:

    Select icon in the Contextual task bar to perform different actions such as Refine edgeTransform selectionSelect similarCrop from selectionHide selection bar.

  8. Select Download.
