Automate selections with Quick selection tool

Learn how to make a selection using an adjustable round brush with the Quick selection tool.

Follow along with any project to learn how to make selections.

  1. On the Photoshop on the web homepage, under Start something new, select Upload an image and browse for a file on your device.

  2. Choose Select > Quick selection .

  3. Set the Brush size and Brush hardness in the options bar.

  4. Drag across the area that you would like to select. 

    Note:

    The Quick selection tool will automatically detect the image edges as you drag, to create a selection.

  5. In the tool options bar, choose Select more  or Select less to add to or subtract from the current selection.

  6. Select More options and choose from the given options:

    • Spacing: Controls the distance between the brush marks in a stroke. 
    • Angle: Specifies the angle by which an elliptical or sampled brush’s long axis is rotated from horizontal.
    • Roundness: Specifies the ratio between the brush’s short and long axes.
  7. In the Contextual task bar, you can further refine the selection using other options such as Generative FillCreate maskAdjustInvert selectionContent-aware fill, or Deselect.

  8. Select Download.
