Add 3D models to Photoshop (beta) app designs with Substance 3D Viewer

Adobe Substance 3D Viewer (beta) is a stand-alone desktop app for viewing and editing 3D files. It works with the Photoshop (beta) app, enabling you to seamlessly add 3D models to your 2D Photoshop designs as editable Smart Objects. This enables you to bring 3D content into your traditional design workflows seamlessly.

What you'll need:

This tutorial will help you get started with 3D workflows in the Photoshop (beta) app by walking through the following steps:

  1. In Photoshop (beta) app:

Drag and drop a 3D model into the Photoshop (beta) app.

    • If Adobe Substance 3D Viewer (beta) is already installed,  your 3D model will appear on the canvas as a new Smart Object, accessible from the Layers panel.
    • If Adobe Substance 3D Viewer (beta) is not installed, you will be prompted to install it using the Creative Cloud app. Repeat step one again once the installation is complete.
  2. Composite the Smart Object in your design. This layer can be moved, scaled, and rotated within the composition.

  3. You can edit the 3D model’s position, size, lighting, and appearance in Substance 3D Viewer (beta). To do so, in the Photoshop (beta) app either double-click on the Smart Object thumbnail in the Layers panel, or select the Smart Object and click the Edit Contents button in the Properties panel. This launches Substance 3D Viewer (beta).

  4. In Substance 3D Viewer (beta):

In the Canvas view of Substance 3D Viewer (beta), your 3D model appears composited with its underlying layers from the Photoshop file, enabling you to edit your 3D model in the context of your Photoshop design.
In the 3D View, you can easily orbit around your model, inspect parts, and make changes without affecting the Canvas view.

  5. Adjust the camera position and angle around the 3D model using the navigation shortcuts listed at the bottom of the screen.

  6. Select the Environment Panel and click the Light presets to change the lighting environment.

  7. Adjust the light rotation to fine-tune shading and reflections.

  8. Click “To Photoshop” to send the updated result to the Photoshop (beta) app. Any changes made in the Substance 3D Viewer (beta) app will appear in the Smart Object layer in your Photoshop 2D design.

Once you're ready to take the next step, you can learn how to view and edit 3D models with Substance 3D Viewer (beta).

Note:

The Substance 3D Viewer (beta) app is available in English, French, German, and Japanese. The application can still be downloaded by all locales via CCD and will default to English for non-localized regions.
