Provide a brief description of the Photo or Art you want to generate, and InDesign will swiftly provide multiple variations for you to explore. Try out the variants and select the one that suits your layout.

Note:
  • Before you proceed, ensure you're connected to the internet, as Text to Image requires cloud processing.
  • Text to Image is not available in mainland China.
  1. Go to Window > Text to Image.

    You can also access the Text to Image panel from the Contextual Task Bar.

  2. Type in a description of the output you're looking for in the Prompt field.

    Tip:

    Need some inspiration? Select the Sample Prompts section and then select any readily available prompt to view the text and image variations.

  3. Select the Advanced  button to refine your prompt.

    Use the advanced options to refine your prompt and generate the exact variation to meet your needs.

  4. Select the Aspect ratio from Frame dimensions, Landscape (4:3), Portrait (3:4), Square (1:1), Widescreen (16:9), or Vertical (9:16).

    If you've selected an image frame before selecting a variation, it will fit the frame irrespective of the Aspect ratio.

  5. Select the Content type from Photo or Art based on your requirements.

    Tip:

    Don't know the content type? Toggle the Auto button on to pick the Content type automatically.

  6. Customize your image by adding a Reference Image and selecting Style Effects.

  7. Select Generate   .

  8. Select an image from the three generated options in the Variations section to place it anywhere in your document.

    Tip:
    • All variations are downloaded to your computer in the following location:
      • Windows: C:\Users\<username>\Documents\InDesign GenAI Assets
      • macOS:  /Users/username/Documents/InDesign GenAI Assets
    • You can see all the placed variations in the Links panel.
    • For images generated using GenAI features, you'll see the OK   icon in the Status section of the Links panel.
    • You can edit the generated images. Right-click the placed variation, go to Edit With, and then select any application.
  9. Hover over a variation in the Text to Image panel, select the ellipsis   icon, and then select Place variationGood Result  Bad Result  Report variation  , or Delete variation  .

How is Text to Image different from other tools in InDesign?

Text to Image is a generative AI-powered capability powered by Adobe Firefly. Unlike other InDesign capabilities, this capability enables you to use a text prompt to generate images in various Content types (Photo or Art) and Aspect ratio (LandscapePortraitSquareWidescreen, or Vertical) quickly and easily.

How should I use Text to Image? What can InDesign users do with Text to Image?

Text to Image is a generative AI-powered capability that enables you to create images using a simple text prompt. It can be used to jump-start your next project or spark inspiration for ideation, brainstorming, and design exploration.

Tip:

For an effective text prompt, stick with simple and direct language. Use three to eight words, including a description, character, color, scene, and more. Don’t worry about adding commands like add or remove. Instead, use simple phrases like sunrise behind mountains, a man with headphones, or an ice cream parlor. What are examples of ways I can use Text to Image?

  • Text to Image is an AI-powered capability that can be used to create various images. Enter a text prompt, then select the Generate button to see a selection of images based on the content type and format or aspect ratio you choose. The newly generated content can be scaled and edited.
  • Get inspired with Text to Image. Quickly generate various images so you can progress from an idea to artwork for brainstorming and experimentation. 
  • Images are editable and created non-destructively, enabling adjustments as you see fit and the ability to reverse the effects when you change your mind without damaging the original document.

How does the Text to Image feature in InDesign accelerate creative workflows?

Text to Image enables you to create images using a simple text prompt.  Rather than searching for stock or acquiring images, Text to Image creates images without requiring you to leave InDesign.

Do users need to be experienced with InDesign to use Text to Image?

InDesign users of all levels can use Text to Image. Text to Image capabilities can be accessed with a simple text prompt to achieve realistic results that will surprise and delight you.

What is the maximum resolution of the output created using generative AI features in InDesign?

The Firefly model currently returns an output of 2K resolution for generated images (up to 4K for expands) to InDesign.

Can I use the images generated with Text to Image for commercial purposes?

In general, you may use outputs from generative AI features commercially. However, if Adobe designates in the product or elsewhere that a beta version of a generative AI feature cannot be used commercially, then the generated outputs from that beta feature are for personal use only and cannot be used commercially.

Should I add Content Credentials for images generated using Text to Image?
