Customize generative AI results with reference images

Learn how to use a reference image to generate content.

  Reference Image is a beta feature in Photoshop on web now available for testing and feedback.

Follow along with any project to learn how to retouch images.

Upload a reference image to guide the content of variations when using Generative fill. This approach ensures relevant and customized results, offering better control than text prompts, especially for styles or details that are difficult to describe.

  1. On the Photoshop on the web homepage, under Start something new, select Upload an image and browse for a file on your device.

  2. Choose Select > Lasso and make a freehand selection.

  3. In the Contextual task bar that appears, select Generative fill .

  4. Select the icon to upload a reference image.

  5. Type an effective prompt in the What would you like to generate textbox to pair it with the reference image.

  6. Select Generate .

  7. Select your desired image from the Contextual task bar.

    Tip:
    • Select to generate more variations of the image based on your current prompt and Layer properties to edit the text prompt and generate a new image.
    • Select More actions to access other options: Good result, Bad result, Delete variation, Report variation, Generative AI terms, Watch quick video, and Hide contextual task bar.
  8. Select Download.
