Learn how to use the Ripple Edit tool to trim clip edges, automatically close gaps, and preview ripple edits in real time.

Live Ripple Edit lets you preview ripple edits in real time as you trim clips, with downstream clips shifting immediately and sequence duration updating dynamically. Sequence marker behavior depends on the Ripple Sequence Markers setting and the type of edit performed. If your workflow relies on sequence markers, review this setting before editing to ensure the results match your expectations.

Select the clip you want to edit in the timeline.

Use B on your keyboard to activate the Ripple Edit  tool.

Select and drag the end of the clip to the left or right to shorten or lengthen the clip, respectively. As you drag, the timeline updates in real time:

  • Downstream clips shift immediately.
  • The sequence duration adjusts dynamically.

Learn how the Ripple Edit tool automatically closes the gap between clips.

Control how sequence markers behave during ripple edits

Select Marker > Ripple Sequence Markers to turn it on or off.

Sequence marker behavior depends on the Ripple Sequence Markers setting:

  • When enabled, sequence markers move with ripple edits.
  • When disabled, sequence markers remain fixed at their original time position during ripple trims.
Note

During Extract operations, sequence markers that fall within the extracted range are removed. This occurs regardless of the Ripple Sequence Markers setting.
