Convert your Legacy Titles into Source Graphics that can be saved with your projects and edited using the modern titling and design tools in the Essential Graphics panel.

Note: As of version 23.0 (released in October 2022), Premiere Pro no longer includes the Legacy Titler.

We strongly recommend transitioning to the  Essential Graphics panel  for your titling workflows if you've not done so already.

Are you transitioning from the Legacy Titler to the new titling tools? Download this guide.

Create cool titles and graphics with the Essential Graphic panel's tools

Convert Legacy Titles when opening a project

When opening a project containing Legacy Titles, a dialog informs you that the Legacy Titler is no longer supported and that all your Legacy titles will get upgraded to Source graphics.

What are Source Graphics?

Source Graphics are Essential Graphics that work in a similar way to Legacy Titles:

  • They have a project item.
  • You can track usage through the metadata column for Video Usage.
  • Edits made to the project item or an associated track item will ripple through all track items.
Note:

Source Graphics do not support the Responsive Design – Time feature.

Why upgrade Legacy Titles to Source Graphics?

The  Legacy Titler workflow in Premiere Pro was retired with version 23.0 in October 2022. If you're still using an older version of Premiere Pro that supports the Legacy Titler, we strongly encourage you to move to the new titling tools in the Essential Graphics panel to become familiar with the new capabilities and smoothly transition to these workflows.

Note:

As a best practice, we recommend making a copy of projects before upgrading Legacy Titles.

Upgrade Legacy titles

Premiere Pro 23.0 upgrades Legacy Titles to Source Graphics automatically, but if you're using older versions of Premiere Pro (15.4.5 - 22.6.4 versions), you can upgrade them by completing the following steps:

  1. Select the Legacy Title in the Project Panel.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • To upgrade a single Legacy Title, click Graphic > Upgrade Legacy Title.
    • To upgrade All Legacy Titles, click Graphics > Upgrade All Legacy Titles.

To compare the upgraded Source Graphic to your Legacy Title, duplicate your Legacy Title on the track and only upgrade one of the copies in the Project panel. This way, you can make a side-by-side comparison of the results.

Premiere Pro adds a Source graphic with the suffix "-Upgraded" to the Project panel and replaces all instances of the Legacy Title on tracks with the Source Graphic. If you used a Legacy Title in multiple sequences with different frame sizes, Premiere Pro will create multiple instances of the upgraded Source graphic to match each individual sequence.

Note:

Make sure you quality check the upgraded graphics, as not all characteristics of a Legacy Title translate perfectly into Source Graphics.  Rolls, crawls, tracking and rotated text are not translated. There may also be other minor differences.

How accurately does Upgrade Legacy Titles work?

Upgrade Legacy Titles does not provide a perfect copy of the original title. Source Graphics use a more modern codebase and do not share all of the same attributes as the old Legacy Titles.
