Text-Based Editing is an entirely new way to edit that makes creating a rough cut as simple as copying and pasting text.

Frequently asked questions

Overview of the Text-Based Editing workflow in Premiere Pro

Text-Based Editing in Premiere Pro begins by transcribing source footage. Select text in the source transcripts to add video clips to the Timeline and build the sequence. Switch to the sequence transcript to work on the rough cut. You can copy and paste text to move clips in the sequence, delete pauses, and remove repetition.

When you’re happy with your rough cut, switch to video editing tools for trimming and refining your cuts and pacing, as well as color grading, audio sweetening, and adding titles or graphics. Throughout your workflow, the sequence transcript serves as a handy navigation tool – and you can use it anytime to perform edits on your sequence.

When your editing is finished, you can use the sequence transcript to generate captions for your video.

No. Text-Based Editing in Premiere Pro is included with your subscription.

The transcription accuracy is dependent on the quality of the recorded audio. With well-recorded dialog and minimal background noise, transcription accuracy is industry standard or better.

Text-Based Editing is available for 18 languages and dialects – the same as are supported by Speech to Text.

Transcription for Text-Based Editing is done on your device (the same as with Speech to Text) 

No. Text-Based Editing does not generate dialog.

Premiere Pro can automatically generate transcripts when you import your footage. If you wish to transcribe only some of your source media, you can right-click individual source files in the Project panel and select Transcribe.

No. After importing your footage, you can transcribe individual clips by selecting them in the Text panel.

No. Use your final edited sequence to create captions. Open the Caption tab in the Text panel and select Create captions from transcript. It will generate a static transcript of your sequence to create captions.

Note:

The captions workflow will not work with Text-Based Editing.

Yes. Text-Based Editing transcripts include timecode metadata and will sync dynamically with clips on the Timeline.

Transcripts used for captioning are static and don't sync with edits on the timeline.

No. You can use Search to find all instances of a word. However, you can only delete one selection at a time. We recommend doing this kind of cleanup in the sequence transcript after you've built out your initial rough cut.

Yes. After syncing your audio, you can create transcripts and use Text-Based Editing in multicam workflows.

Text-Based Editing can be used to create rough cuts for collaborative editing with Team Projects and within multi-project Productions.

We recommend using the built-in spellchecker in Premiere Pro, and for less common words, you can use Search and replace to bulk edit them in the Text panel.

Note:

If necessary, you can export transcripts as .txt or .csv files. It’s possible to re-import spell-corrected transcripts in the same formats, but this is less reliable, and the updated transcript may not connect with the video timecode.

To use Text-Based Editing, transcripts must be generated inside Premiere Pro.

However, you can import transcripts to create captions.
