After Effects feature summary (October 2024 release)

The October 2024 (25.0) release presents new features, workflow improvements, and important fixes in After Effects.

A fresh, modern, and consistent design across After Effects

  • After Effects features a fresh, new design that’s modern and more consistent. You get cleaner fonts and typography for better legibility and consistency with other Adobe Creative Cloud apps.
  • After Effects is significantly faster than previous versions because of hardware-accelerated UI performance on Windows devices. A smoother and more efficient user interface and user experience in After Effects means quicker interactions and overall workflow efficiency.
  • With Theme modes—a standard dark, darkest, and high-contrast accessibility mode—you can customize the look and feel of After Effects to your preference. Switching between these modes gives you the flexibility to select the setting that best matches your environment and personal preference, whether for enhanced readability or improved visibility based on current lighting conditions.

Per-character Text and Paragraph styling in Expressions

Style attributes of individual characters

Along with using text expressions to set style attributes for the entire Text layer, you can also set style attributes of individual characters in the layer. A benefit of this per-character control is the automatic reflowing of text, such as when scaling letters, using superscript, and using a different font, just as you would expect from substring styling from the Character panel.

Paragraph attributes for text layers

There is an extended set of paragraph attributes that you can manipulate using expressions and apply to the entire Text layer.

  • Direction
  • Every-Line Composer
  • First Line Indent
  • Justification
  • Leading Type
  • Left Margin
  • Right Margin
  • Space After
  • Space Before
  • Hanging Roman Punctuation

Decluttered 3D Model Import

When you import a 3D model into After Effects, only the main model file appears at the root level in the Project panel rather than displaying all the supporting files. This provides a cleaner view, making it easier to identify, manage, and work with files without visual clutter. Dependent and related files needed for the model—such as material files, model data, scene configurations, binary data, and texture files—are not displayed. This streamlined approach helps you focus on the main model without being distracted by the supporting files.

Decluttered 3D model import ensures all dependent and related files of an imported 3D file are no longer visible in the Project panel.

Additional updates

  • After Effects has upgraded the OpenColorIO library to version 2.3.2, which includes various improvements and updates from the OpenColorIO team.
  • New additional video formats are now color-managed in After Effects. This means After Effects can read the embedded color space information in the media files, if available, and apply the appropriate color management to ensure that the colors in your video are accurately interpreted and consistent throughout your workflow.
