Firefly FAQ for Adobe Stock Contributors

Adobe Firefly is a family of creative generative AI models and is available as a standalone web application available at firefly.adobe.com as well as through features powered by Firefly in Adobe’s flagship apps. The first commercially released Firefly model was trained on Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content, and public domain content where copyright has expired and is designed to generate images safe for commercial use.

We have compiled some questions and answers, which we anticipate Adobe Stock Contributors have. For a more comprehensive Firefly FAQ, please click here

Yes. While the terms we already have with Adobe Stock contributors permit Adobe to create and train Firefly models, we have created a Firefly bonus compensation plan, for all eligible Adobe Stock contributors whose content was used in the dataset training of the first commercially released Firefly model.

All eligible Adobe Stock contributors with photos, vectors or illustrations in the standard and Premium collection, whose content was used to train the first commercial Firefly model received a Firefly bonus payment on September 13, 2023. The bonus payment is not guaranteed, it varies for each eligible contributor, and is paid at Adobe’s discretion. Further details:

  • The initial bonus is based on the all-time total number of approved images you submitted to Adobe Stock and the number of licenses that those images generated in the 12-month period between June 3rd, 2022, to June 2nd, 2023. The bonus is weighted towards licenses.
  • Anyone who received a Firefly bonus payment can request a payout. The minimum $25 requirement for payouts has been lowered to $1 during 3 months between September 13, 2023 – December 12, 2023, but only for contributors who received a bonus payment.  Note, after requesting a payout below or above $25, subsequent payout requests require a minimum balance of $25.
  • Important: Any violation of the Contributor Additional Terms of Use especially those where IP rights have been violated, or where license downloads have been inflated, may result in account closure as well as the cancellation of any potential Firefly contributor bonus.
  • We plan to base potential subsequent bonuses on new approved images and licenses they generated.

After the initial Firefly bonus compensation on September 13, 2023 for eligible online images and their downloads, which occurred between June 3, 2022, and June 2, 2023, any potential subsequent bonuses are planned to be based on new approved images and downloads. Please note, that subsequent bonus calculations and timeline are still subject to further evaluation and the model may change.

The payment is different for every Stock contributor because it is based on number of total images online and the number of licenses that these images generated in the last 12 months. See details above.

The Firefly bonus payment was added to your overall balance in the contributor portal on September 13, 2023. A banner on the Insights > My Statistics tab provides the specific amount that was added.

The minimum cash out level for contributors who received a Firefly bonus has been lowered to $1 during a period of 3 months from September 13, 2023 – December 12, 2023. Important: Once you have requested a payment, regardless of the amount, the minimum payout level returns to $25 for subsequent payout requests.

Payments are processed in the order received. Depending on volume of requests, payments may take longer than the standard 8-10 business days.

We don’t have any information to share on that at this time.

Firefly-generated assets from the commercially released version can be submitted to Adobe Stock as long as they meet our generative AI submission guidelines and don’t contain a watermark.

In general, outputs from generative AI features may be used commercially. However, if Adobe designates in the product or elsewhere that a beta version of a generative AI feature cannot be used commercially, then the generated outputs from that beta feature are for personal use only and cannot be used commercially.

We currently do not allow for an opt-out mechanism for Adobe Stock content, as this content is used for building AI models for a variety of existing and future Stock features.

We expect this will provide us opportunities to ensure that customers using Firefly are also exposed to relevant Adobe Stock content as an alternative to the generated images and we hope this increases usage of contributed content.

Additionally, when it comes to the visual world, creating quality work takes more than technical ability with any specific tool or software, it is an artists’ imagination, vision and creativity that delights customers. This will not change with the emergence of generative AI tools: The stock industry will still need interesting, thought-provoking and imaginative concepts from skilled contributors who understand composition, and who have a strong grasp on the latest visual trends to address customer demands.
