Error: A number is out of range while viewing or deleting PDF pages

Issue

Acrobat displays the error "A number is out of range" occasionally when you:

  • View a PDF.
  • Delete a page from a PDF.
  • Perform operations on the PDF, such as combining it with another PDF or adding a new page.
Out of range error

The error occurs when Acrobat detects issues in the PDF document structure.

Steps to troubleshoot

Export the PDF to a PostScript file and then use Acrobat Distiller to convert it back into a PDF.

Note:

This solution works well for a PDF without interactive elements, such as multimedia or form fields.

Don't try this solution for a PDF with interactive elements, as those elements may not work correctly after conversion.

  1. Open the PDF in Acrobat.

  2. Select the hamburger menu   (Windows) or the File menu (macOS). Then select Export a PDF > PostScript.

  3. In the Save As PDF dialog box, enter a different name for the file, and then choose Save.

  4. Go to the folder where you saved the PostScript file. Right-click the file and choose Open with Acrobat Distiller.

Acrobat Distiller converts the PostScript file into a PDF file. The PDF file is saved in the same folder.

  5. Open the PDF file in Acrobat. Now, try to view the pages or delete, insert, or add a page in the PDF.
