Adobe Firefly generative AI features for K12

Learn how to access and manage Adobe Firefly-powered generative AI features for K12.

Adobe Firefly generative AI features are available and turned on by default to all K12 educators and students. To ensure district-level control over these features, upon the launch of Firefly in the K12 product, administrators can turn off the generative AI features through an Adobe Firefly toggle control within the Adobe Admin Console.

What is generative AI?

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can translate ordinary words and other inputs into extraordinary results. While the conversation around this technology has centered on AI image and art generation, generative AI can do much more than generate static images from text prompts. With a few simple words and the right AI generator, anyone can create videos, documents, digital experiences, rich images, and art. AI art generators can also be useful for producing “creative building blocks” like brushes, vectors, and textures that can add to or form the foundation of pieces of content.

What is Adobe Firefly?

Adobe Firefly is a new family of creative generative AI models and is available through features powered by Firefly, such as Text to Image generation and Text Effects. It was trained on Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content, and public domain content, where the copyright has expired, and is designed to generate images safe for commercial use.

How is Adobe bringing AI to K12 classrooms safely?

When it comes to education, safety, transparency, and responsibility are paramount for everyone in a learning community, including students, educators, staff, parents, and guardians. The first version of the Adobe Firefly family of models was trained on a data set composed primarily of Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content, and public domain content where the copyright has expired. Adobe Express’s generative AI features powered by Firefly include guardrails to embed safety in AI prompts and the corresponding images generated. Given this, we believe Adobe Firefly is designed to create commercially safe images that can be used in a broad range of ways. The model is designed to generate high-quality images that are representative across demographics, which enhances creativity and internalized learning in the classroom.

Additionally, we keep administrators in the driver’s seat with the ability to toggle on and off our Generative AI features. Lastly, with the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), Adobe is setting the industry standard for responsible generative AI. The CAI offers free, publicly available open-source tools and is working on a widely adopted technical standard in collaboration with leading technology organizations through the nonprofit Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA). Firefly will automatically attach a tag in the embedded Content Credentials to make AI-generated art and content easily distinguishable from work created without generative AI.

Which Adobe Firefly generative AI features are available for K12 educators and students?

Text Effects and Text to Image features that are accessible in Adobe Creative Cloud apps, including Adobe Express and Adobe Photoshop, are available and turned on by default for all K12 users.

  • Text Effects: Edit a single line of text (up to 20 characters) and stylize it with a text prompt or by selecting from a list of appealing styles or inspirations.
  • Text to Image: Create beautiful images using a text prompt or selecting from a list of appealing styles or inspirations.

In the future, more Adobe generative AI features may be released to K12 users.

Who will be able to manage the Adobe Firefly generative AI features access for K12 educators and students?

Within the Adobe Admin Console, IT administrators can manage access to the Adobe Firefly generative AI features for all users of a product profile.

What will be the default state in the product for Firefly generative AI features for K12 educators and students?

Text Effects and Text to Image will be available by default for all K12 educators and students within an organization. IT administrators can manage access to these features within the Adobe Admin Console.

Can K12 IT admins manage the Adobe Firefly features for their organization?

Admins can manage Adobe Firefly access for their organization within the Adobe Admin Console.

Why can't the students and educators in my school access Firefly features?

If your students and educators are using a Shared Device License, they won't be able to access the Firefly features as Shared Device Licenses don't include services - only desktop apps. You must assign a named user license or an Adobe Express license to provide them with Adobe Firefly generative AI features.

How will IT administrators be able to turn off Firefly generative AI features for K12?

While creating or editing a product profile, admins will be able to modify the list of services that are available to users of that product profile – including Adobe Firefly entitlement.

  1. Navigate to the Products tab in the Admin Console and select a product or offer.

  2. Select the View Details   icon next to the product profile name.

  3. In the details drawer that opens, you can turn any service available in the product profile on or off.

    Note:

Disabling the Firefly service will turn off all Firefly generative AI features for any user assigned to this profile. If you have assigned multiple profiles per user, make sure that the profile settings are the same for all users using Adobe Firefly generative AI.

Can IT Administrators turn the Firefly generative AI features back on after they have been turned off?

Yes. While creating or editing a product profile, admins can modify the list of services available to users assigned to that product profile – including Adobe Firefly entitlement.

  1. Navigate to the Products tab in the Admin Console and select a product or offer.

  2. Select the View Details   icon next to the product profile name.

  3. In the details drawer that opens, you can turn any service available in the product profile on or off.

Will IT administrators be able to turn off just one Firefly generative AI feature for K12 and not the other?

No. Within the Adobe Admin Console, the Adobe Firefly toggle will control access to all Adobe Firefly generative AI features available for K12 (Text Effects and Text to Image). The IT administrator can manage the availability of Text Effects and Text to Image access at the product profile level, enabling both features or turning both of them off.

How can educators request the IT admin to turn on the Adobe Firefly generative AI features for a school?

Educators should reach out to the IT admin directly to request access.

Are there any materials for educators to learn about Firefly generative AI features for K12?

Over the next few weeks, materials will be released to educate and equip K12 educators on new Adobe Firefly generative AI features that will be shared on the Adobe Education Exchange. Until then, interested educators should learn more about Adobe Firefly here.

Is there a way for admins to control the Adobe Firefly entitlement for one group and not another?

Yes. Access to Adobe Firefly features can be managed at the profile level in the Adobe Admin Console by turning off the features for one specific school within an organization and not another. Admins can assign a separate product profile for each group with desired settings for Adobe Firefly with access turned on or off.

How can Adobe Firefly access be managed if an organization has Creative Cloud and Adobe Express access?

Creative Cloud includes Adobe Express, so one product profile could be assigned with Adobe Firefly generative AI, and the other can be turned off. This will prevent any Adobe Firefly generative AI features for that particular profile. When assigning multiple profiles per user, admins need to make sure profile settings are the same for all users using Adobe Firefly generative AI.

How can access to Adobe Firefly be controlled if using roster sync?

If using Clever or ClassLink roster sync, a default roster product profile is created automatically when configuring the sync. Edit this profile via the product screen and turn off Adobe Firefly generative AI. This will apply to all users in the console, as there is only one Roster Profile. If Roster sync is used or Adobe Express and Creative Cloud, both product profiles will need to be edited.
