Generative Background (Beta)

Adobe Dimension makes it easy to add context to your 3D scenes by compositing a photograph and using Match Image to automatically align the camera and lighting. Now, you can also generate your own background images using Generative Background (Beta), powered by Adobe Firefly.

To use Generative Background (Beta)

  1. Open the Generative Background panel from the left-hand toolbar.

  2. Write a text prompt that describes the background image you want to create.

  3. Adjust the optional style settings to control the look and feel of the generated image.

  4. Use Generate to begin generating images. Each use of the feature will generate four variations.

  5. Click on one of the returned variations to apply it as a background. Dimension will automatically run Match Image to align the lighting and perspective to the background image

Generative background (Beta) settings

Generative background (Beta) is powered by Adobe Firefly and provides similar functionality for controlling aspect ratio and applying select style settings.

In addition, the openness setting can be used to control the amount of flat surfaces available in your image to better composite your objects.

Tips for writing background prompts

Generative backgrounds are intended to provide context and environments behind composited 3D models. The best results will describe that environment and not the 3D scene content itself and should include the objects, materials, lighting, and perspective you want to see in the end result. Being specific will give you more control. You can use a single statement, comma separators, or multiple sentences.

You can also use the Samples in the Generative Background panel to get started exploring prompt ideas.

Generative credits

Generative background does not use credits while in beta.

Please see the generative credit FAQ for the latest information on how generative credits work across Adobe tools.

Content Credentials

What are Content Credentials?

Content Credentials allow creators to attach extra information to their content when they export or download it. By including this information, creators can receive more recognition for their work, connect with others online, and enhance transparency for their audience. To learn more about Content Credentials and why you should consider including them with your work, read the Content Credentials overview.

How are Content Credentials used in Dimension?

Content Credentials are automatically applied when using the Generative background (Beta) workflow for supported file formats. This will apply a Content Credential to the images for generated backgrounds, generated environment lights, and final rendered images. The Content Credential includes the following information:

  • That the image was created in Substance 3D Dimension.
  • The version of Dimension used.
  • That Adobe Firefly was used as an AI tool.
