Install log error, registry key failure | Creative Suite 5, CS5.5 | Windows

Issue

One or more of the following errors appears in your Creative Suite 5 or CS5.5 product installer log files:

  • Creating Registry Key Failed - Start 64-bit:<is64Bit> root:<root> role:<role> perm:<permissions> key:<key>. Error:<error>
  • Deleting Registry Key - failure. Error <error>
  • Error occurred: <error code>
  • Deleting Registry Value - failure. Error: <error>
  • Unable to get permissions of "<filepath>"
  • Unable to restore owner <uid> and group <gid> for <filepath>
  • Key opening - failure. Key: <key> Error: <error code>

These errors indicate problems reading or writing to Windows registry entries. To solve them, verify permissions to the registry key and then reinstall (see Solution 1). If that doesn't work, uninstall your Creative Suite 5 or CS5.5 product, run the CS5 Cleaner Tool, and reinstall (see Solution 2).

Solution 1: Verify permissions to the registry key

The registry key in the error messages appears immediately after "key:" or immediately after the error message. The parent registry key is the key immediately before the last key referenced in the error. In the example below, the parent directory is 00AB3F0724720E34E9C33DC2408D35F6.

  1. Check the Creative Suite 5 or CS5.5 main install log for the errors listed under Issue. Record any registry keys associated with the error messages.

  1. Verify and reset permissions for each registry key using the instructions for Windows XP or for Windows Vista/Windows 7.

 Windows XP

  1. Choose Start > Run, type regedit in the Open text field of the Run dialog box, and then click OK.
  2. Navigate to the parent of the key referenced in the error message. For example, for the key

  3. Right-click the key and select Permissions.
  4. Verify that Administrators and System are present and that Full Control is selected under the Allow column.
  5. In the Permissions dialog box, click Advanced.
  6. On the Owner tab, select the Administrators group, check Replace Owner On Subcontainers And Objects, and then click Apply.

    Note: Select the current administrator account if the Administrators group is unavailable.
  7. In the Permissions tab, select Reset Permissions On All Child Objects And Enable Propagation Of Inheritable Permissions, and then click OK. 

    IMPORTANT: If you receive a message indicating that some child objects could not be modified, click OK until all dialog boxes are closed, then try again.
  8. Click OK in the Advanced Security Settings dialog box.
  9. Repeat steps 1-8 on any additional registry keys.
  10. Run the Creative Suite 5 or CS5.5 installation again.

Windows Vista/Windows 7

Important: To complete this process, accept or continue through any User Account Control dialog boxes that are displayed.

  1. Choose Start, type regedit in the Search text field, and then press Enter.
  2. Navigate to the parent of the key referenced in the error message. For example, for the key

  3. Right-click the parent key and select Permissions.

Occasionally, renaming the key allows the installer to re-create the key and reset the permissions if the key is corrupted. If you can't change permissions or rename that key, contact Microsoft or your hardware vendor for assistance.

Solution 2: Uninstall the Creative Suite product, run the CS5 Cleaner Tool, and reinstall

  1. Uninstall your Creative Suite 5 or CS5.5 products using the Add Or Remove Programs Control Panel (Windows XP) or the Programs And Features Control Panel (Windows Vista, Windows 7).
  2. Run the CS5 Cleaner Tool and select the options to remove all CS5 products.  See Resolve installation problems with CS5 Cleaner Tool | CS5, CS4, CS3 (cpsid_82947).
  3. Run the Creative Suite 5 or CS5.5 installer again.
